FAQs

Please contact us with your project details and we would be happy to provide you with an estimate. You will be pleasantly surprised with our overall knowledge, flexibility and the turn-around options we offer.

Clients call us to explain their concerns and inquire about our services related to those concerns. Concerns tend to arise in response to property restoration, renovations and demolition, especially in older buildings or following a significant moisture incident. We discuss our clients needs and present an estimate for our work along with any recommendations or requirements they need to be aware of to safely complete their project.

My background is in both civil and mechanical engineering through the UofS. I work as an engineer for 7 years before becoming a building official, specializing in ventilation and fire prevention, for the next 3 years. Over that same period, I started designing custom homes as a side venture; this is still a passion of mine and I continue to design custom homes for various clients in the evenings. In 2010 I took a position as an indoor air quality consultant where I worked extensively with mould and asbestos over the next three years. In 2013 I started Built Environments Canada to offer better consulting services to the people of Saskatchewan with better rates.

Working to understand ventilation as a building official coupled with my work as an indoor air quality consultant gave me unparalleled incite into recognizing and controlling concerns in our buildings, especially related to mould growth. Having an uncle that has died of Mesothelioma and knowing asbestos is currently the number one killer of all workers in Saskatchewan, I am also extremely passionate about the safe handling of asbestos and other hazardous materials in older buildings.

Our primary clients are restoration contractors though we do work extensively with both residential and commercial clients with mould or other hazardous materials concerns in their buildings.

Our most recent project was the collection of vermiculite to determine if it was asbestos containing prior to starting work in a home. We came out to the client the same day as the call came in and the next day we were able to confirm that the material was not asbestos containing. Workers were able to safely proceed without special material handling as a result of our testing saving our client both time and money. Please note that approximately 90% of all vermiculite sold in North America was sourced from Libby, Montana and is a high-risk asbestos containing materials to handle. Always assume vermiculite is asbestos containing unless tested to confirm otherwise!

If you are planning any restoration, renovation or demolition in a building constructed prior to 1990, hazardous materials will very likely be present. Any contractor who does not mention this fact is putting both their workers and your family's health in jeopardy for the sake of profit. It is not worth the savings these contractors may offer to put good people at risk.

Ask if they have considered the possibility of hazardous materials being handled as part of the proposed work and how that work will be completed safely. If they seem to shrug this question off, contact a good consultant. You'll be glad you did.
