Mental disease auxiliary
Kelowna, V1P 1A1
Karis provides a loving environment for women struggling with addictions and mental health challenges. In December 2006 a group of friends and family identified two gaps in Kelowna’s continuum of social services; affordable housing for individuals living in or near poverty and program based support for women seeking recovery from addictions. Although temporary shelters were available, there was no long-term, sustainable programming designed to empower older women to transition from a life of addiction to a life in recovery. Karis Support Society was formed from a heartfelt desire to respond to these significant needs. In 2008 Karis opened BERNARD HOUSE, an 8 bed recovery home for women over 35 years of age, who had made several unsuccessful attempts at recovery. A caring team of support workers offered daily recovery and life skill programming, in a safe home where women could recover from addictions and restore their self esteem. Secure housing, caring support and good programming empowered the women of Bernard House to grow strong physically, mentally and relationally. During those early years Karis’ partnered with AIMHSS (Adult Integrated Mental Health Support Society) to provide financial support for a two-year residential program for 6 women struggling to overcome the effects of mental illness and addiction.SJ4YHastings

Explorations of life with(in) mental illness, addiction ﹠ recovery. Be moved. Be inspired. Be part of the change. ABOUT ﹠ SCOPE Open Minds Quarterly is a glossy 28-page consumer magazine with paid circulation, which features poetry, memoir, fiction, interviews, reviews and other writing and art by people whose experiences are often diagnosed as mental illnesses or addictions, and by our supporters and allies. OMQ aims to amplify the voices of people personally affected by mental illness and/or addiction, facilitating explorations of life with(in) illness and recovery. In so doing, we: (1) grow the language, narrative structures and media forms available to us for making sense of our world, helping to shape contemporary Canadian and world literatures; (2) offer our lived experiences to inform policy, legislation and community attitudes around mental illness; (3) create space for people with lived experience of mental illness and/or addiction to consider our differences, the marginalization and oppression many of us face because of colonization, racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, ableism and capitalism, and the ways these injustices make us unwell; and (4) testify to the significance, impact and dignity of our lives, in spite of the stigma that marks us otherwise. OMQ is published by Northern Initiative for Social Action, a peer-run mental health support organization built on the premise that people with mental illnesses and/or addictions are intelligent, creative and valuable. Only writers who are personally affected by mental health or addiction issues, whether as a survivor or as an ally or helping professional, are eligible for publication in OMQ. WHAT WE PUBLISH Our scope is purposefully broad. We want to review and disseminate explorations of life with(in) mental illness and/or addictions, as well as discussion of concepts such as recovery and wellness, in all the forms these works might take: Attestations—Creative nonfiction, including personal essays ﹠ memoir (1000-3000 words) Refractions—Fiction, drama ﹠ other forms of storytelling (1000-3000 words) Inscriptions—Interviews, reviews, opinion ﹠ research articles (1000-3000 words) Emanations—Poetry, flash prose ﹠ similar (up to 4 pieces, max. 8 pages/3000 words) Manifestations—Visual, digital ﹠ mixed media (up to 4 pieces, max. 8 pages/3000 words) Disorientations—Experimental writing (up to 4 pieces, max. 8 pages/3000 words) Work should be typed and submitted online at https://openmindsquarterly.submittable.com/submit. Bereavement Ontario Network. We connect organizations, professionals and grieving clients. Online. Members get visibility and access services in Ontario. Bereavement Ontario Network is a diverse group of organizations and individuals throughout the province that work in the field of grief, bereavement, and mourning as professionals and volunteers. The need for a network was first discussed in 1989 at a bereavement conference in Hamilton. The ideas, enthusiasm and energy generated during that conference led to a meeting a year later at which a blueprint for the Bereavement Ontario Network was developed. It does no grief counselling or provide any direct service. Instead, it fills a distinct void by providing linkages between the various groups, counsellors, and bereavement resources already in place. Today, the Bereavement Ontario Network provides an opportunity to access, in a reciprocal manner, the knowledge, experience, wisdom and sensitivity of other members throughout the province. You can use BON to access this support for your clients, and yourself, from across the province. Membership in the Bereavement Ontario Network is open to individuals, volunteer organizations, small businesses, and corporations. If your work brings you in contact with the bereaved, BON can help you help them. BON offers an annual conference, a directory of members, a newsletter, a website, and the services of volunteer Regional Representatives. These Regional Representatives reflect all areas of the province and are available to answer questions about the organization, its resources and how it can assist you. KEYWORDS. BriarPatch Centre for Grieving Families
Edmonton, T5A 0A1The BriarPatch Centre for Grieving Families provides bereavement services and education to those who have experienced the death of someone they love. The BriarPatch Centre for Grieving Families Program was created as a program of Pilgrims Hospice of Edmonton in 2000 to meet the needs of Edmonton Area families who are seeking caring and compassionate support for their individual and unique bereavement journey. Program services include the popular Expressive Arts support group settings, individual and family counselling, Colored Tears summer daycamps, and art and music therapies. Children may attend starting at age 5 until age 12. Teens may attend from 13 to 18 years of age. Bereaved children and teens that have experienced the death of a loved one are more at risk for psychological and behavioral difficulties than those that have not experienced such a loss. Helping a bereaved child or teen is the epitome of good preventive mental, physical and spiritual health care. Involvement in Expressive Arts programming provides children and teens and their families with the necessary social sanction and permission to express their feelings. They find comfort and relief in knowing that others feel the way they do and that they are not alone.
