As a home-based business, our emphasis is on quality over quantity, with the minimal-processing, extra care and oversight only possible with a smaller-scale venture, a driving force in our operation. We try to go the extra mile and take the added care necessary to produce a quality, small-batch, natural and local product. Our main product is our unpasteurized Bee Quest Honey, collected from hives located along the Nith River watershed and sold both from our home and through our small but select network of local vendors in the Kitchener area. Julia also makes a selection of beeswax candles from beeswax laboriously collected through the harvest season by Tom; Julia is also a formidable Quality Control Chief. We also provide smaller, special occasion gift jars of honey (for wedding favours, etc.) and are available for Apicultural talks, with PowerPoint presentation, literature, etc. and, depending on the season, live bees in an observation hive. Our customer base is largely, but not exclusively, local. Our health-conscious customers like our honey because it is from local nectar sources (with all the medicinal and nutritional benefits of local) and, since processing is minimal, retains the natural “nose” (aroma) and flavour of unadulterated honey. We are a small family farm focused on exhibition poultry and also the sales of quail and their eggs. After the 2016 show season, Geordie, Kate and I decided to bring back our family farm’s prefix and use it for exhibiting poultry. The Rockford prefix was used in the early 20th century by my great grandfather Daniel McFarlane and later by my grandfather Robert McFarlane. They both raised Clydesdales and milked Ayrshires. Around 2010, my uncle sold the farm’s quota and filled the barn with heritage poultry and waterfowl. Geordie, Kate and I often visited the farm and picked out our favorite breeds. The kids would play in the incubation room with the chicks. We learned a lot during those years on the farm and that is why we find it so fitting to use the Rockford prefix. Today, Geordie is very passionate about his white plymouth rocks and over the years, he has won a number of shows and starred wins. After seeing her big brother do so well with the rocks, Kate decided to choose a breed of her own. Kate went through the SOP and chose black Old English Games. Myself, being a history major, I have always been intrigued with the Quebec Chanteclerc and the genetics behind the breed. For the Chanteclerc’s 100th anniversary, we are hoping to distribute young birds to potential 4-H enthusiasts as their poultry project. We holistically manage cattle and chickens iin a way that focuses on animal health, meat and egg quality, and soil restoration. Planned grazing improves soil and grass biodiversity and makes our ranch self-sustainable rather than relying on commercial fertilizers and weed control. We use horses and people on foot to move our animals as much as possible, reducing the amount we use vehicles around the animals. We believe raising animals in this way produces excellent meat. Gail has always been interested in fibre which is why alpacas was such a good fit with their new property. Alpaca fleece is lustrous and silky, warmer than wool, not prickly and contains no lanolin, which makes it nonallergenic. It is soft and luxurious. Alpaca fibre is also flame-resistant. Gn’R Farm processes their fleece from start to finish. The alpacas are sheered in May, the processing continues right through till the next sheering. All the while the animals are starting to grow new fleece for the next season. We have raw fleece, carded fleece, hand pulled roving, hand spun yarns, right through to completed items like hats, mitts, scarves..... Items may be felted, knit, crocheted or woven.
